Christopher Creveling-Imagn Images Wembanyama is a portmanteau of wem, ban, and y mama. Four wins in a row? What are we, the 2022 Spurs? The March 20 - 28, 2022 San Antonio Spurs to be exact—the last time your Spurs won four games in a row. What seemed out of reach and a fog of a memory from long ago became a reality on Tuesday night as the good guys blasted their way to a victory and a chance to advance out of their group. Victor Wembanyama led all players with 34 points and a torrid 6 - 14 shooting from downtown. Rookie phenom Stephon Castle poured in 23 points while Julian Champagnie contributed 15 points and added 3 steals. After a slow start to his sophomore campaign, Wembanyama pressed the turbo button and will not let up, averaging 32.5 points per game in his last 6 match-ups. It’s no coincidence that during this stretch, the young Frenchman is hitting 44% of his three-point shots while maintaining an insane (maybe to others, but not to me) 12.8 attempts per game. Is this sustainable? Maybe, maybe not. But let’s find out! Should he keep sniping it from way beyond? Absotively. A mid-range jumper? Please sir, if you’re going to start being an offensive threat from every area of the court, we need a 30-day notice. And I’m pretty sure adding in a fade away violates a city ordinance. 34 for Vic pic.twitter.com/Yq1ZDDgC3j— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) November 27, 2024 This superb footwork and pivot from Stephon Castle was particularly impressive as he is beginning to leverage his threat of driving to the basket into secondary moves in the mid-range to create space for jumpers. Seriously, don’t these kids know that mid-range is sooo early 2000s? OKAY STEPH 20 points for the Rookie! pic.twitter.com/nAcL51mEOp— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) November 27, 2024 The maturity of Castle’s game cannot be overstated. Here, he uses his patience to buy an uncontested bucket after receiving a quick pass from Chris Paul. The rookie continues to build his case as a budding star in his own right. got eeeeeem pic.twitter.com/mNd9Yqyd7i— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) November 27, 2024 It’s never too early to say I am thankful for the unselfishness of this team. Blake Wesley and Sandro Mamukelashvili are the type of people to hold the two ends of a wishbone and wish that other person scores 50 points in their next game before snapping it. Wesley and Mamukelashvili were instrumental in this win as well with Wesley scoring 11 points off the bench while Mamukelashvili had 9 points in only 12 minutes. Blake ➡️ Mamu!!! pic.twitter.com/hEp8kUbXFp— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) November 27, 2024 Yoink. CP3 had 3 steals in this game. I feel like it’s mentioned at least once a game that Paul is 35 years old. We get it! Professional athletes over the age of 30 are biological marvels that should be revered with aghast and amazement. The mere fact that they still eat dinner after 4 and manage not to yell at anyone in a movie theater while hoarding hard candy in their pockets is a miracle in of itself. picked his pocket pic.twitter.com/3PdzZrSJXe— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) November 27, 2024 Looks like Keldon Johnson invented a new move as he skipped through his defender for a reverse layup. We’ll call it the Bluegrass step. Johnson, for his part, turned 19 minutes into 10 points and 5 rebounds as he continues to lead the Spurs bench mob. KJ got crafty with this one END Q1 | SAS 32, UTA 35 pic.twitter.com/ZeXezcXLQm— San Antonio Spurs (@spurs) November 27, 2024 In hindsight, watching Wembanyama drain threes with ease suggests that his early season struggles from deep could be attributed to knocking rust off, tweaking his shot, carryover fatigue from playing in the Olympics, BEING FREAKING 20 YEARS OLD, and any other reason or excuse critics and supporters alike could come up with. Maybe. Just maybe, the young star prefers to snipe from faraway rather than bang down low and absorb punishment. The truth is somewhere in between, but enjoy the ride while it’s red hot!
