Inland college notes: RCC rolls into the playoffs riding its prolific offense
Nov 27, 2024
It could be another high-scoring showdown when the No. 2-ranked Riverside City College football team opens the Southern California Football Association playoffs on Saturday.
The Tigers, who continue to set records for yards per game among other offensive statistical categories, host San Diego Mesa for the second time this month at Wheelock Stadium at 1 p.m.
“We’re putting up points and yards and the most prolific rate,” RCC head coach Tom Craft said.
The last time they faced off, RCC built a two-touchdown lead and then scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to win comfortably, 62-41, over Mesa on Nov. 9.
The Tigers dominated short-yardage situations in the victory, with Brandon McMasters bullying his way across the goal line for touchdowns of 1, 3, 5 and 2 yards.
Third-year sophomore quarterback Brady Jones (Vista Murrieta) has captured most of the headlines with his accurate arm and record-producing play. The 6-foot-4 gunslinger had three touchdown passes inside the red zone vs. Mesa and also ran for an 8-yard score.
“When you’re able to put up some big points at the end of drives, it helps a lot,” Jones said. The Tigers (9-1 overall) are averaging 590 yards and 57.5 points per game this season.
Receivers Dominic Cox (Upland) and Jackson Owens are as good as any receiving duo in the California Community College Athletic Association this season. Both are averaging more than 101 receiving yards per game while combining for 23 touchdowns.
Sophomore defensive end Esaia Bogar (Rancho Cucamonga) and sophomore linebacker Ja’wuan Nickson work in tandem to close the pocket and ensnare opposing quarterbacks.
Bogar, accruing handfuls of offers from NCAA Division I schools including Oklahoma State, Sacramento State and New Mexico, among others, has 8 1/2 sacks this season and has totaled 20 over the last two seasons.
Nickson, a 6-foot, 230-pound run-stuffing middle linebacker, leads the team with 41 tackles and has seven sacks, one forced fumble and an interception.
Mesa sophomore 6-foot-8 freshman quarterback Jax Leatherwood passed for 286 yards and five touchdowns in the loss four weeks ago.
“Personally, I prefer playing against bigger quarterbacks because they’re easier to take down,” said Bogar, who had 1 1/2 sacks against Leatherwood. “They’re not as elusive as the little guys.”
Leatherwood led the No. 17-ranked Olympians (8-2) to a 14-10 win at Palomar in their regular season finale on Nov. 16 despite throwing for a career-high four interceptions.
BRONCOS GET TOP SEED
Despite losing in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team will be the No. 1 seed when it hosts the upcoming NCAA Division II West Regional.
The Broncos (23-3 overall) lost in four sets to Cal State L.A. – the reigning Division II national champion – yet plays No. 8 seed Simon Fraser when the West Regional tournament begins at Kellogg Arena on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 1:30 p.m.
It will be Cal Poly Pomona’s 20th all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament. The winner of the West Regional advances to the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Cal State San Bernardino, which also lost in the opening round of the CCAA tournament, did not qualify for the West Regional for the first time since 1999.
SBVC VOLLEYBALL BEATS RCC
The San Bernardino Valley College women’s volleyball team earned its first postseason win in 22 years.
Propelled by a 5-0 start, the Wolverines used that momentum to beat Riverside City College 25-16, 25-18, 16-25, 25-12 in a CCCAA SoCal Regional playoff match on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Sophomore outside hitter Manaia Mamea (Summit) had 23 kills and sophomore setter Christina Muller (Redlands East Valley), who was at the serve line for the opening five-point run in the first set, had 37 assists.
Inland Empire Athletic Conference coach of the year Robert Vansant’s team took down No. 3-seeded Moorpark 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 18-25 in a second-round match Tuesday night. The Wolverines will travel to Cerritos College for a third-round match Saturday at 6 p.m.
NORCO SOCCER STUMBLES
Unbeaten through all of October and into November, the Norco College men’s soccer team had eyes on a bigger prize.
Despite averaging more than 1.5 goals per game this season, the Mustangs (15-3-5 overall) were unable to find the back of the net in a season-ending 2-0 loss at Cerritos in the third round CCCAA SoCal Regional playoffs on Tuesday.
Ranked No. 5 in the state prior to the game, Norco was riding an 11-match unbeaten streak and had earned a bye into the second round of the playoffs.
The Mustangs beat Chaffey 1-0 in that second round playoff match on Saturday, Nov. 23, with a goal from Alexander Galan (Ontario) in the second half.
