CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WGHP) — With the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill making the decision to move on from Mack Brown, the question of what's next comes naturally.
Brown, 73, is UNC’s all-time leader in wins and games coached. The decision to fire a coach of Brown's stature must be followed with a quality replacement fire.

Jon Sumrall is one of the blossoming coaching stars in college football right now.
The 42-year-old played linebacker at Kentucky from 2002-2004 and was a linebackers coach/defensive coordinator at several stops before being named the head coach at Troy University in Alabama in 2021.
Troy had been coming off of three consecutive losing seasons under the guide of current UNC offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and proceeded to win the Sun Belt Conference in Sumrall's two seasons there.
After going 23-4 with two conference titles at Troy, Sumrall was named head coach at Tulane in 2023.
Tulane lost many players to the transfer portal coming off of a 23-5 two-year stretch under head coach Willie Fritz who left for the University of Houston.
Sumrall quickly replenished the talent at Tulane and currently has the Green Wave sitting at 9-2 and No. 18 in the nation with a perfect record in American Athletic Conference play. Their two defeats were to ranked Power Four opponents.
Sumrall currently boasts an impressive career record of 32-6.

Glenn Schumann is also one of the burgeoning stars in college football coaching.
Although the 34-year-old has never been a head coach, he boasts a resume as an assistant that most coaches could never dream of attaining.
The son of a former college defensive coordinator, Schumann did not play college football and instead enrolled at the University of Alabama for the distinct purpose of becoming a student assistant under the greatest college football coach of all time, Nick Saban.
After six years at Alabama as a student, and then graduate assistant, Schumann became Alabama's director of football operations, essentially acting as the team's general manager.
In 2016, he took on his first on-field coaching role becoming the interior linebackers coach at Georgia where he has since worked his way up to co-defensive coordinator and now full-time defensive coordinator.
Schumann has been a part of six championship-winning coach staffs, four at Alabama and two at Georgia.

Chadwell made his name at Coastal Carolina in 2020 leading the team to an 11-0 start and peaking at No. 12 in the polls that year.
Chadwell went 39-22 overall in four years at Coastal Carolina. However, he went 31-6 in his last three years at the school.

In 2022, Chadwell was hired as the next head coach of Liberty after Hugh Freeze departed for Auburn.
Chadwell started the year 13-0 in his first year at Liberty and made a New Year's Six Bowl before losing to No. 8 Oregon.
Liberty is currently 8-2 this season.

Dan Mullen is a longtime veteran head coach in college football's premier conference the SEC with a proven track record of success.
After cutting his teeth under the tutelage of 3-time national championship-winning head coach Urban Meyer at Florida.
Mullen was named head coach at Mississippi State in 2009 and remained there for nine years going 69-46 at one of the toughest places to win in the SEC and helped mentor future Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Mullen was named head coach at Florida in 2017 and made it to three consecutive New Year's Six Bowls in his first three seasons at Florida, finishing in the top 15 of the polls each time.
Mullen was fired after a 5-6 record in 2021 and has worked as an ESPN analyst since.

Arthur Smith is an NFL coaching lifer with a connection to UNC.
The 42-year-old play-caller was an offensive lineman at Carolina from 2001-2005 and got his first coaching job as a graduate assistant in Chapel Hill.
Smith worked his way up the NFL ladder and eventually became the offensive coordinator for the Tennesee Titans and helped design one of the best offenses in the history of the franchise with stars like Derrick Henry and AJ Brown.

He is currently the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Another added benefit of hiring Smith is the fact that he is the son of FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith who could possibly act as a financial supporter of the football program.
Ben Johnson: Detroit Lions offensive coordinator

This 38-year-old Asheville native is the biggest coaching star in the NFL right now.
He is currently leading a dominant Detroit Lions offense for a team currently favored to win the Super Bowl.
But before that, Johnson was a reserve quarterback at UNC.
Johnson has already passed on several NFL head coaching opportunities and is known to be incredibly choosy when it comes to leaving for another job.
He is also likely to once again have his choice of NFL head coaching openings and is thus unlikely to accept the position.
Jeff Saturday: ESPN analyst, former Indianapolis Colts interim head coach

Jeff Saturday is one of the best offensive linemen of the 2000s and is best known for the 13 years he spent as Peyton Manning's center with the Indianapolis Colts.
But before that, he starred for Mack Brown's Tar Heels in the late '90s.

Saturday had a controversial stint as the Colts' interim head coach in 2022 when he was named to the position without any prior professional coaching experience or being on the staff already. He went 1-7 with the Colts and was passed over for the head coaching job next season.
Saturday being named head coach at UNC given his lack of experience seems unlikely, but a job with the staff of the next head coach could be a possibility.
