Thanksgiving storms and Arctic blast: what you need to know
Nov 27, 2024
A strong cold front will bring rain to the region overnight. Rain could be heavy at times and may impact area Turkey Trots and morning travel across the region. By late morning into early afternoon a cold front will sweep through the region sparking isolated thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area near and south of I-85 as a level 1 (out of 5) as an area to watch for potential severe storms.
The main threats will be damaging wind that could bring down branches or outdoor decorations. The tornado threat is low, but not zero and a brief spin up will be possible where low level wind shear aligns with surface instability. Dewpoints will be climbing into the 60s with temperatures warming into the upper 60s to near 70 adding moisture and instability into the mix. Strong winds aloft will help storms organize and potentially intensify. Drier air aloft may limit the number of storms that develop, but the ones that do could pack a punch. The earlier the cold front moves through, the lower the severe potential.
Rain and storms will taper off with drier air by mid to late afternoon. It will remain breezy through the day with gusts 30-35 mph possible through the early evening. Clouds will clear and temperatures will fall quickly after sunset.
Light snow showers will be possible Thursday night through Friday morning for the mountains as colder air collides with some lingering moisture. Accumulations will remain light, but higher elevations above 5000 feet could receive up to an inch. This could lead to slick driving conditions, but overall impacts will be limited.
A sharp drop in temperature follows the cold front and will impact the entire region. Highs will struggle to reach the mid 40s to low 50s across the Piedmont. Lows will plummet Friday night into the mid 20s to low 30s – the first widespread freeze of the season. This will be the start of a frigid stretch with temperatures struggling to break out of the 40s this weekend. Even colder temperatures will follow early next week marking a very cold start to Meteorological Winter.
