Snowmobile season waits for snow and ice to open
Nov 27, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — On December 1, the official snowmobile season will open — however, North Dakota's 2,800 miles of trails still need to be groomed and ready for travel.
There needs to be at least four inches of packed snow cover to allow for grooming, signs need to be put in place, and wetland areas must have thick enough ice to support the weight of trail groomers.
The public can start getting prepared by doing these six things in order to ride when the trails are ready.
Get proper registration from the North Dakota Department of Transportation and carry that while riding
Make sure snowmobiles are in good operating condition
Out-of-state riders can buy trail access passes from North Dakota Parks and Recreation
Get helmets and appropriate winter gear
Get familiar with trail maps and signage
Check ice conditions before riding over frozen water
Safety tips for winter holiday traveling
"Snowmobiling is a great way to connect to the outdoors during our winter season," explained the Recreation Chief for North Dakota Parks and Recreation, Tony Hillig. "People can support local communities, enjoy time with family, and explore many areas of our state they may not have visited before."
To view updates and conditions, people can use the free Snowmobile North Dakota mobile app. It also tracks trips, your current location, and offers locations with nearby amenities.
Maps and conditions can also be found online.
"North Dakota's snowmobile trails offer something for everyone, from thrilling rides through open fields to scenic routes through forested areas," added SnowmobileND Executive Director, Todd Thronson. "Riders are encouraged to ride responsibly, stay on designated trails, and most importantly, have fun."
Kids ages 10 and older who don't have a valid driver's license or permit must take a safety certification class, it can be done online at any time.
