BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry named District Attorney Tony Clayton as the new chair of the Southern University Board of Supervisors on Wednesday morning. Clayton's new role goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. “I have known Tony for a long time and there is no one better suited for this position. As a graduate of Southern University, he knows exactly what it takes to bring the University’s education to a higher standard and properly train students for the workforce. I look forward to his great work,” said Landry. Clayton graduated from Southern University in 1988 and Southern University Law Center in 1991. He has served as the chairman and vice chairman of the university's board of supervisors. In 2020, he was elected district attorney for Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes. He previously served as first assistant district attorney and chief of felony trials for the 18th Judicial District Office. I stand ready to implement this agenda and grow Southern University’s education and workforce standards,” said Clayton.  The board's next meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, in New Orleans.
