BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A study shows which states are the worst to work in using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The study by Duddy, Goodwin & Pollard analyzed the percentage of employed people represented by unions and the states with the highest work fatality rates in 2022. Wyoming was identified as the worst state to work in with an overall score of 9.6. According to the study, the state had 34 deaths overall and a 12.7% rate for work-related fatalities in 2022 and 7.3% of 243 employees reporting union support. Mississippi was named the second worst state to work in. The overall score of 5.3 came from the 6.9% work-related death rate and 38 total deaths and 7.2% reporting union support. South Carolina and Louisiana tied for third with overall scores of 5.1. How dangerous are Louisiana jobs? Study shows where state ranks Data from the study shows that South Carolina had a work fatality rate of 6.1% and 2% reporting union support. In Louisiana, the state had 120 workplace fatalities in 2022, with a death rate of 6.4% and 5.2% of employees reporting union support.
