Safety concerns could force out Laurel condo residents

LAUREL, Md. (DC News Now) -- Time is running out for many families to remain in their homes at the Tiers of Laurel Lakes Condominiums.
Management has until Jan. 10, 2025, to make mandatory repairs to 49 stairwells. Otherwise, those who live in the 166 units that rely on the stairs, will have to find somewhere else to live.
"It would be very tough because, I mean, it would be very short notice," said Eric Harris, who has lived in the complex for about three years. "So, I mean, in order to move somewhere else, I would have to put together the funding to move."

City crews placed signs at the bottom of the affected stairwells and placed letters on the doors of the condominiums to remind people of the impending deadline.
A statement from the city of Laurel said inspections found the staircases unsafe back in September. Ffity-eight had been deemed a safety risk back in December 2021.
"Our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of every resident in our community," said Mayor Keith Sydnor. "We understand the challenges and disruptions this situation creates for the families affected, and these actions were not taken lightly. However, when structural issues jeopardize lives, we must act decisively to protect public safety and enforce compliance with critical safety codes. The safety of our community cannot be compromised."
Marcus Brooks said part of the problem, is with the previous management group. However, a company representative told DC News Now, that the board terminated its deal back in July without a reason, as a new management company started in October.
The decision to vacate the units disappointed the head of the homeowners association.
DC News Now reached out to the apartment's new company but did not hear back in time for publication.
