Miami police going to Washington for Trump inauguration security
Nov 27, 2024
Miami police will join a coordinated effort with a wide range of law enforcement agencies in Washington, DC, during the upcoming 60th Presidential Inauguration.
On Nov. 21, the Miami City Commission approved the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia for the police department’s participation in the Presidential Inauguration Task Force. From Jan. 17 to 21, Miami police will work in the nation’s capital with law enforcement agencies from across the nation to ensure coordination and heightened security throughout the inaugural ceremonies.
The task force oversees all security and interagency cooperation surrounding the inauguration, including military ceremonial support. It comprises representatives of all branches of the armed forces, as well as key agencies like the US Marshals Service, US Secret Service, the FBI and the National Park Service.
Together, these agencies aim to maximize coordination to ensure the safety of the president-elect, inaugural participants, the public and visitors, while upholding the constitutional rights of all attendees. According to the Nov. 21 commission resolution, Miami police have been asked to assist during the inauguration as a participating agency.
The memorandum details the responsibilities of the participating agencies, including resource management, planning, training and public relations. It also outlines the structure of the task force, with the city police department’s inaugural planning committee commanding officer assuming day-to-day operational control for the unit. This officer will work closely with supervisors from the Secret Service, which is the lead agency for special deputation and coordination.
Assignment of task force personnel is at the discretion of each law enforcement agency. Under the memorandum, the Miami Police Department will provide full-time services of its personnel and assumes all costs, including salaries, overtime and fringe benefits during the operation. Costs will be reimbursed by the District of Columbia, with funds provided by the US and from general revenue.
