STORMS’ ELECTRIC FALLOUT: Florida Power & Light should be able to recover about $1.2 billion from customers to cover costs of restoring power after hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton and to replenish a storm reserve fund, state Public Service Commission staff members recommended last week. The regulatory commission is scheduled to take up FPL’s request during a Dec. 3 meeting. FPL wants to recover the costs from customers over a 12-month period starting in January. The commission in the past has regularly approved such costs, which are essentially a temporary add-on to customer bills. Under FPL’s proposal, filed Oct. 29, customers in this area who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity would see their monthly bills go from the current $121.19 a month to $133.99 in January.
COPPER COPPERS: Miami-Dade could create a special police unit or expand an existing unit to deal with thefts of costly copper wiring that are damaging street lighting and causing lighting outages under legislation that new county commission Chairman Anthony Rodriguez has up for a vote Dec. 3. His measure if passed would direct the mayor to create a plan within 30 days to combat copper wire theft as well as a plan to repair or replace “all damaged street lighting devices and facilities within the county’s jurisdiction and control” and report in a month to the commission on both directives.
JUST PLANE GLASS: Miami International Airport will replace 10 more passenger loading bridges into planes within a year with glass-walled bridges in a $21.5 million contract with a firm from Barcelona, Spain, that is up for a county commission vote Dec. 3. The airport in all is replacing 126 of the bridges, of which 32 have already been replaced, says a memo from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. The memo stresses that the aesthetic aspect of the glass-walled bridges “offers air passengers a less confining and more luxurious experience by providing a view of the airfield as they board or deplane an airliner,” so all future passenger bridge replacements will be glass walled. The memo also says that the glass bridges “are easier to maintain and are more energy efficient.” Adelte Ports and Maritime of Barcelona beat out TK Airport Solutions, which has a Miami address but a higher price.
GAS PRICE DIPS: Average gasoline prices in Miami fell 2.6 cents per gallon last week to $3.10, according to GasBuddy. Prices are 7.3 cents lower than a month ago and 0.4 cents lower than a year ago. The national average fell 1.4 cents to $3.01, down 11.2 cents from a month ago.
