ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — After migrants around Albany were notified they have to vacate their hotel by the year's end, News 8 is following up on asylum-seeking families in our community. Downtown Rochester Holiday Inn wrapping up role with asylum-seeking families Monroe County is not in the same situation. According to the Ibero American Action League, all families that were at our local hotel since July have all been relocated and are all living on their own now. "You're on your own, you have integrated into the community, and I believe that is a successful part of the program," Ibero American Action League Director of Migrant Services Daisy Ruiz Marin Ruiz Marin told News 8 Monroe County has received 130 families since last October, and Marin said we can expect at least 70 more over the next two years. All of which will immediately be moved into their own assigned apartment. "We have a landlord. We have a great relationship with our landlords now, and they like the program. They like how it works. And every time that they have an apartment available, they reach out to us. And from that we go ahead and make sure that we identify family that fits that apartment, and we bring them in," Ruiz Marin said. The organization hired to manage much of this, DocGo, is no longer being used here. Marin also noted some families have graduated the 12-month program in place early, reaching self-sufficiency before then. And some able to start seeking employment. "The asylum process is, once you have completed the application for asylum, it does take about six months to be eligible for a work permit. At that time, you do apply for work permit. After the six months, you receive it, and then you apply for employment," Ruiz Marin said. Ruiz Marin said above all… "We continue to be committed to our mission and to serve them. We are working towards making sure that they're educated in regard to the changes that may be coming, knowing their rights and making sure that they are connected to all the resources they may need," she said. The Ibero American Action League is also hosting a Santa event in December to provide gifts to those children in need. We have more information on how to get involved here.
