FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Millions will travel to visit loved ones for Thanksgiving this week; AAA predicts 10.7 million people will travel just in California, but experts say there are ways to avoid the chaos.  Flying A predicted 5.84 million people will fly during the week of Thanksgiving. “The best part of Thanksgiving is having an occasion that’s family-oriented and all about being together,” a woman said while waiting for her nephew at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport.  Airport officials say the holidays are simultaneously the happiest and the busiest times of year for them.  “It is a busy travel season at the airport and at airports nationwide, so it is recommended that travelers arrive at least two hours prior to their domestic flight and three hours prior to their international flight,” airport representative Vikki Calderon said.  The airport’s busiest travel days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. Calderon recommends flying other days if passengers want to avoid the heaviest crowds.  For anyone hoping to travel with Thanksgiving food, she reminds passengers that liquids weighing more than 3.4 ounces must be in a checked bag. Liquids include anything you can spread, pump or spray.  Driving The vast majority of travelers will drive, with AAA expecting 71.7 million people on the road. One thing those drivers can be thankful for this year is lower gas prices. “It's down about $0.22 a gallon in the last month, and it's about $0.40 lower than going into Thanksgiving last year. So certainly a very opportune time as millions of Americans prepare to hit the road for Thanksgiving. Gas prices have been declining across most of the country,” GasBuddy spokesperson Patrick De Haan said. De Haan says prices can vary drastically between stations. He says that is why it is important to do your research. “The most important thing, check an app like GasBuddy or Google Maps. Those will show you what the gas prices are and you'll be able to find a lower priced station that way,” De Haan said. He says it also helps to leave early and drive slow to increase fuel efficiency.
