FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Since Thanksgiving tends to be the most heavily traveled holiday, local Fresno County law enforcement agencies have launched a Traffic Safety Awareness Campaign. "One of the most dangerous things you're going to do each day is get in your car and drive each and every day," said CHP Capt. Austin Matulonis.   A partnership first of its kind for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office. "Typically, we've done the gang operations, we've done the high enforcement stuff, but we've never participated in a traffic detail like this that I can recall, so that's what we're going to do, we feel this is important," said Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni. Each year, from now until New Year's, more than 20 people are killed in fatal motor vehicle crashes in Fresno County. The California Highway Patrol, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, and the District Attorney's Office hope that educating and warning drivers will save at least one life. In Fresno County, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death, surpassing homicides.  The top three contributing factors are driving while intoxicated, texting and driving, and speeding. "Case in point, what happened this morning, a vehicle speeding on the 180 loses control, goes over, and kills the passenger, we need to stop these fatalities and let's be honest, we cannot enforce our way out of these alone, we need the community's help," shared Matulonis.  Since Oct. 30, these agencies have increased patrol and DUI checkpoints, this will continue until the 1st of the year.  But that's not all; there are 10 digital billboard campaigns in both English and Spanish, that are located in accident-prone areas. Along with social media posts specifically targeting men aged 18 to 35 and 50-year-old men. "Looking at the data that was provided by the highway patrol, these individuals in these age groups are the ones that are losing their lives at the highest rates, and so we want to target these individuals with this appropriate messaging to remind people to slow down, don't drink and drive and don't text and drive," stated Nathan Magsig, Fresno Co. Supervisor, District 5.
