CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Chesterfield County Animal Services says there is still time to foster an animal for the Thanksgiving Holiday, but folks have to act fast! On Friday, Nov. 15, the shelter took to Facebook to seek fosters to shelter pets over the Thanksgiving holiday week until Monday, Dec. 2. Chesterfield County Animal Services Shelter supervisor, Andrea Ramat, told 8News that, thus far, roughly 10 cats and dogs have been fostered but more than 20 remain. Additionally, she says that fostering, even for the holiday week, will be a great assistance as kennel masters rotate the holidays. "Our staff have to come to this animal shelter no matter what, so the less animals that are in the building, the less time it takes them to clean and they can get home for Thanksgiving sooner as well," Ramat said. "It's [also] a great opportunity because it gives the animals a break from the shelter." What are the requirements to foster an animal? To foster a cat or dog for the Thanksgiving holiday week, the potential foster must: Be 18 years of age or older A Chesterfield County resident Must not leave the county should he or she foster the animal Ramat adds the reasoning for the foster to live in the county is that, should the animal need sudden medical care, their respective officers are based in Chesterfield County and they would need to come to the foster's residence to take the animal to the appropriate care center. Is there a fee to foster? No, fostering an animal through Chesterfield County Animal Services is at no cost and staff will provide a carrier along with the necessary supplies, including food the animal(s) will need. When is the deadline to foster an animal? The deadline for Chesterfield County Animal Services is Wednesday, Nov. 27. Those interested can call and/or visit the shelter as early as 10:30 a.m. and before 5 p.m. as the shelter closes then. What if I don't live in Chesterfield County?
