PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — An emergency meeting was held by city officials Tuesday night after the 11th murder of the year in Providence. On the night of Nov. 24, Keith Singleton was shot and killed on Monticello Street. “I just said to myself, ‘we cannot get a break as a neighborhood,'” Providence City Councilman Justin Roias said. The deadly shooting prompted Roias to call an emergency meeting, where members of the Providence Police Department also expressed frustration. “This whole year we took 297 guns off the street, at the same time last year we had 288,” Capt. Richard Fernandes said. “This is what we’re getting, so you can imagine there’s a lot of guns out there.” Police offered crucial advice to residents at the meeting. “If you see something suspicious, say something, report it,” Fernandes said. “You don’t have to leave your name.” Members of the North End affirmed a need to work more closely with police. “They’re very responsive, I think it’s about us coming together and maybe reporting irregularities that we see in the neighborhood,” Davinci Center Director Norma Gonzalez said. “Any suspicion of crime that we see in the neighborhood [we need] to be able to call and report it.” Roias acknowledged, while the meeting was a step in the right direction, there is much work to be done. “I want folks to walk away, not feeling like everything’s going to be solved right away, but knowing that we care,” Roias said.
