Several Fort Wayne parks to get new playground equipment
Nov 26, 2024
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Your favorite park may be getting a facelift.
On Tuesday, Fort Wayne City Council discussed new equipment for parks that the city deemed a "high priority for replacement due to the age of existing equipment, condition, and availability of replacement parts." City Council voted 7-0 -- two councilmembers were absent -- in favor of providing funding for the equipment.
Those parks include Indian Village Park, McCormick Park, Lakeside Park, Jehl Park, Waynedale Park and Franke Park.
Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Director Steve McDaniel said the projects will continue a trend the department started in 2023.
"In the last year, we've done 12 different playground sites. This year, we're going to be adding another six to it," McDaniel said. "We've got one in each district. We're really excited about that."

The park projects will cost $1,170,000, and some parks were bundled into singular bills:
Jehl and Lakeside Parks - $425,000
Indian Village and McCormick Parks - $405,000
Franke Park - $175,000
Waynedale Park - $165,000
Councilman Geoff Paddock, who oversees the Fort Wayne's 5th District, said he is pleased to see the playground projects move forward for the many children in the community who utilize them.
"We've got a number of parks where we're going to see not only new state-of-the-art playground equipment, but playground equipment that's geared to a certain age of child, and of course playground equipment that's now available for those children with disabilities," Paddock said.
McDaniel hopes to have construction of all the playgrounds finished in summer 2025.
