UPDATE: Tuesday 11:45 a.m. - According to the Nueces County Medical Examiner's office, the man who was shot in the officer-involved shooting was 34-year-old Rodney Alan Garcia. ________________________________ORIGINAL STORY: A Corpus Christi Independent School District police officer was involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting at the Walmart on the Westside of the city, according to the Corpus Christi Police department. According to CCPD's Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigation Division Billy Breedlove, CCPD received a call for backup from an off-duty CCISD officer at about 4:45 p.m.The CCISD officer had been working in an off-duty capacity and approached a person in the parking lot that the officer suspected had been shoplifting inside Walmart. The officer was somehow dragged into the man's moving vehicle and fired her gun several times, fatally wounding the shoplifter. The officer then fell out of the vehicle, sustaining some injuries. CCPD used a drone to track down the vehicle, and they pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The driver has not been identified at this time. According to CCISD's Chief Kirby, CCPD will be conducting a criminal and administrative investigation. Per protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
