(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is warning the community about kidnapping and ransom hoax calls that have been reported in the area. According to CSPD, between 11:15 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25 and 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, CSPD received three separate reports of kidnapping incidents. CSPD said callers contacted family members of an alleged kidnapping victim, using a person on the line to mimic the victim's voice. Male voices were also heard during the calls, demanding a $5,000 ransom, which was later negotiated down to $2,500. The callers instructed the family members to deliver the money to a specified location or transfer it electronically. In some instances, CSPD said the callers falsely claimed to be members of a cartel. CSPD said upon investigation, the calls were determined to be hoaxes aimed at extorting money from victims. Police urge the public to remain vigilant and recognize these calls as hoaxes. CSPD recommends anyone who receives a call like this try to verify your loved one's safety by directly calling them or contacting them, if possible, and do not comply with any ransom demands.
