Delano family continues to honor daughter struck and killed in 2012 crash

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Twelve years ago, 12-year-old Shaylyn Pinoliar was walking to school when she was hit and killed by a truck in Delano. Her family still honors her memory, and created a nonprofit in her honor to help families dealing with the tragic and sudden loss of a loved one.
Shaylyn's family memorializes her in their home, keeping her room exactly as it was before she died. Not allowing anyone to come in, as they put it, "It keeps our memories of her alive."
The intersection of Browning Road and Summer Drive has a crosswalk for students going to and leaving from La Vina Middle School, the school Shaylyn was attending at the time of her death.
She was crossing Browning Road, when a ford F250 turning on Summer Drive hit her, at the time police said the driver wasn't moving fast, but the sheer size of the vehicle is what killed Shaylyn.
"At those times, honestly, you don't know what's going on, you're kind of just, in a cloud," said Elsa Pinoliar, Shaylyn's mother, who is still heartbroken over the loss.
Twelve years-later, there is a small vigil for Shaylyn on Browning Road. Elsa says even in their house, Shaylyn's room is still the same, and has kept a shrine of her in the room of her softball career, which she loved.
"We still go in there, although nobody's allowed in there, it's for, it's for us, our coping mechanism, I guess."
Shaylyn's death sparked Elsa and members of the Delano community to form a nonprofit called Spreading Help Around You, or SHAY for short. SHAY helps families that have lost loved ones, whether it be financially or emotionally.
"She played softball with my daughter and that's how I knew Shay," said Patricia Puentes the president of SHAY, which is organizing an annual 5K for Saturday, Nov. 30, in honor of Shaylyn and to raise funds for the organization,
"We have about 85 runners now so we're still open to more runners, the day of the race," said Puentes.
If you want to attend the SHAY 5K on Saturday, it will be at La Vina Middle School in Delano. You can sign up online or day of. Check-in is at 7 a.m. and the walk will start at 8 a.m.. If you have lost a loved one, you can reach out to Spreading Help Around You, by sending a letter through their website.
