The Austin boys hockey team produced its highest scoring game in two years to open the season as four players scored a pair of goals in a 10-4 win over Windom (0-2 overall) in Riverside Arena Tuesday. Seniors Gahvin Schaefer, Grady Carney, Gavin Brekke and freshman Talan Hall all scored twice in the win as the Packers fired 40 shots off on goal. Austin took an early 3-1 lead on breakaway goals by Brekke and Matthew Phanchan in the first period and the team never looked back. “It feels great going into the season with a 10-4 game. This is a great start to the season,” Carney said. “We’ve gotten used to playing with those (younger) guys in practice and they showed tonight that they are extremely ready for games. They showed their skill.” Senior Will Fox added three assists in the win and freshman Tait Johnson finished with 20 saves in net. The last time the Packers broke double digits in goals scored was when they beat Worthingon 11-1 on Jan. 31 of 2023. Schaefer said the win was a breath of fresh air for a program that has struggled in the past. “It’s just been so bad (at times) and to have these young players and have some momentum, it feels so great,” Schaefer said. “We’ve got to get some of the offensive players back on D. Our defensive players are playing well, but we’ve got to work on our D zone.” Austin has a few new contributors on the team as it carries three freshmen, but the eight seniors will provide the most leadership. “We have to learn how to handle losses and we have to know how to handle practice,” Carney said.
