ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Although it may not look like winter quite yet, the chill is in the air as Rochester awaits its first measurable snowfall of the season. Some may already have their snow plow contracts ready to go. However, for those who opt to use their own snow blower, Dennis McCarthy with Mayor’s Hardware says now may be a good time to start prepping them. “Well, I would say always the best thing to do when you pull it out after sitting for months and months is try to start it,” said McCarthy. “If it’s not starting, you might need to troubleshoot it. Go through some maintenance steps to get it going. If it fires right up, you know, let it warm up, run for 5 to 10 minutes and then do all your lubrication and everything you need to do to male sure it’s running right for the season.” When getting the fuel for your snowblower ready, although most snowblowers take regular gas, you may want to consider another option.  “Almost all the snow blowers you see around now use regular gasoline like you put in your car for a four cycle engine. It’s not like your weed whackers and stuff, smaller stuff in there with mix the oil and gas. So you can typically use regular gas like you put in your car but if you’re gonna do that, you may want to consider using ethanol free fuel, which is something I recommend more ethanol. The gas tends to run out parts on the engine quicker,” McCarthy said. Or, you may want to consider not using gasoline as a whole.  “The best thing right now is to consider possibly going to a battery powered snow blower. If you make the switch to battery, there’s lots of great deals and opportunities on those now. You eliminate almost every problem you could have with a snow blower. And you can use the batteries on other lawn equipment you might have throughout the year,” said McCarthy.
