FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Poinsettia plant is a holiday staple in many households and it's a tradition that goes back to the 1800s.  “Everybody buys grandma poinsettia," said Jon Reelhorn who is the Owner of Belmont Nursery. "So, I just love them because they're on everybody's table, they're in everybody's house, it's just festive.” Poinsettias are native to Mexico and were originally cultivated by the Aztecs who called it Cuetlaxochitl. Back then it was used for dying clothes, cosmetics and medicine. Today it is used to symbolize goodwill, cheer, and community spirit. Reelhorn says there are some things to look for when picking the perfect one.  “The first tip I'd talk about buying a point poinsettia would be look at the flowers and the flowers of these small green and yellow-brown shapes here and then in the front," said Reelhorn. "If the flowers are closed, that means the plants are going to last longer, because as the flowers open, then they become more spent." Reelhorn recommends after you select one, you keep it in a cool place inside your home, keeping it away from a fireplace or warm vent which will dry out the plants. He also suggests watering them from the bottom up "Fill your sink with water, just maybe two inches deep, put the pot in water, then let it soak it up from the bottom," said Reelhorn. "Give it 30 minutes, pick it up, let it drain out, the water will go all the way to the top of the soil level, and it'll saturate the soil and it'll be the right amount.” Belmont Nursery is one of the few who grow poinsettias locally, many going to fundraisers for local schools and non-profits. You will have no trouble finding the perfect poinsettia, inside their greenhouse you will discover a large selection from the classic red to autumn leaves, which is a peach color with gold and pink, and several other variations.  If you are looking for something more unique you will also find an imperial poinsettia red patio tree. "The only thing I like better than the poinsettia houses being full is when they're empty, because that means they are sold," said Reelhorn. "They'll be here as long as they last, oftentimes we sell out so this is prime time right now." For more information, you can visit the Belmont Nursery website.
