'Just do it': Staying fit in Fresno during the holidays

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Thanksgiving is just a week away which means you probably have a full schedule of gatherings filled with tempting treats, but you can still practice some healthy habits.
”If you're eating turkey and those kind of things and stuffing just use small portions, don't go back for seconds," said Michael Rivera who is a personal trainer. "If you're drinking wine one glass, not four. Practice things we have control over mentally, physically, and even emotionally."
Rivera has been a personal trainer for about 20 years, he says the best time to start thinking about getting in shape is right now.
"Get started today," said Rivera. "Take your time, start with 15 to 20 minutes a day, if you're just starting out, 4 to 5 days in a row. It takes 30 days to create any type of good habit or bad one, so remember that and be consistent with it."
For those just starting out he recommends starting with functional movements and exercises like squats, and lunges which help build strength then moving on to push-ups and sit-ups building a strong core before adding weights.
But finding the motivation to get in the gym can be challenging.
"It's really hard to get in here, especially when you don't see immediate change," said Amber Contino. "I feel like everyone wants that immediate change like they come for a month and they're not seeing anything, but you just have to stick with it and you just have to keep coming. As long as you're here, you're already winning."
To help you stay on track Rivera also recommends finding a partner like a spouse, or even getting your kids involved to help push and encourage each other.
"Wake up early, at least 30 to 45 minutes before you take your kids to school or whatever happen with your busy day," said Rivera. "Find that goal that you can attain, a goal being within 5 to 15 minutes, that being abdominal muscles, push-ups, sit-ups, whatever the easiest goal you can find, attain that goal that way that leads to other good goals or big goals. And third, just do it."
