Mayflower Marathon continues to fight food insecurity
Nov 26, 2024
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Tuesday is day two of the annual Mayflower Marathon food drive, that benefits Springfield`s Open Pantry and although it was a little rainy, that didn't stop people from donating at MGM Springfield.
For 31 years, Rock 102 has been hosting the Mayflower Marathon to help feed families in the community.
Bax & Nagle is broadcasting the marathon for 52 hours while collecting food donations. The marathon runs until 10 a.m. Wednesday and it takes place right by the South End Market at MGM Springfield. Mike Baxendale says here in Hampden County-- food insecurity continues to be an issue and this marathon helps to ensure that families are not going without a meal through the collection of non-perishable food donations in four 53-foot trailers.
"One of three counties in which food insecurity is over 48% and it is an impossible number I mean last year we did this it was 1 in 4 families in the area that were suffering from food insecurity and this year it is nearly 1 in 3 nearly 50 percent," he says.
If you would like to donate you can enter MGM Way by East Columbus Avenue and volunteers will help you to unload your car. You can also do cash and check donations in person and online.
