Thanksgiving travel surge expected as 80M hit the roads and air

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Thanksgiving is now two days away and airports continue to be busy and soon, the roads will start to see an increase in drivers.
Nearly 80 Million Americans are expected to travel over Thanksgiving so if you haven't done so already you may want to thoroughly plan out your trip because many people will be traveling this year.
TSA expects to screen 18.3 million people from today until Monday, Dec. 2nd. AAA Spokesperson Mark Schieldrop says while the majority of Americans will be driving to their destinations this year, the airports will still be busy.
"Travel is big right now," says Schieldrop. "Folks are cashing in those airline miles they have, those credit card rewards to get on the plane and see their friends and family. A lot of college students fly home for the holiday and travel has been really strong all year long."
Hannah from Pittsburgh is one of those students heading back home for the holidays. She says when it comes to flying, buying tickets in advance is the way to go, "I got my tickets a month in advance so it was very cheap. I am taking a one-way flight for $60 and I just took a bus and then a train to get here and I am packing light because I know that security and stuff is going to be busy right now."
This year Thanksgiving air travel is expected to set a new record. AAA projects that nearly 6 million people will fly domestically for this holiday. So while many people will be out and about to celebrate this holiday, you may want to consider planning your commute ahead of time, to beat the traffic and avoid the long lines in the airport.
AAA says the best travel time is before 10 a.m. today through Wednesday, and Thanksgiving Day is when the roads should be the most clear. If you are returning home on Thanksgiving weekend the best time to get on the road is before 1 p.m.
If you leave on Monday, the best travel times are before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
