ACUSHNET, Mass. (WLNE) — The Healey-Driscoll Administration awarded an Acushnet police officer on Tuesday at the 41st Annual Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Awards for Bravery.
Acushnet Officer Kevin M. Martins was awarded the “Medal of Valor” after he continued assisting his team after being wounded in the leg during a shooting.
On Dec. 29, 2023, law enforcement officers responded to a mutual aid call at the Bayside Lounge in Fairhaven, Mass.
At the scene, officers were met with an “armed and agitated” individual in the parking lot, who Massachusetts State Police say posed a significant threat to public safety.
For over 30 minutes, the officers attempted to de-escalate the situation to calm the individual.
After using non-lethal options, including a taser, on the subject, the situation escalated and the subject began shooting at the officers.
Officer Martins was shot in the leg, and according to MSP, “in a moment that epitomizes courage and professionalism,” he continued to assist the team while facing his injury.
The officers returned fire, and neutralized the threat, according to MSP.
“Officer Kevin Martins’ actions are emblematic of selflessness and dedication. Despite being wounded, he demonstrated composure and bravery, embodying the core values of law enforcement. The coordination and resilience displayed by all the officers involved reflect their commitment to public safety, even at great personal risk,” MSP said.
