(WPRI) — Fire officials across the country are warning people to be safe ahead of a busy holiday for firefighters. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are three times more cooking fires on Thanksgiving compared to the daily average. Following these safety tips can help make sure your Thanksgiving doesn't go up in flames: Stay in the kitchen Unattended cooking was the leading contributing factor in both cooking fires and fire deaths. Always keep an eye on food cooking on a stove. If there's a turkey in the oven, don't leave your home and check on it frequently. Keep children away Kids should always remain at lease three feet away from a hot stove. Try establishing a kid-free zone in your kitchen to prevent any accidents. Stove stays clean Clean up any grease near the stove. Also, make sure there are no oven mitts, utensils or dish towels nearby. Clear the area Remove toys, bags or any other items from your kitchen floor. Make sure there is nothing in the area that could cause you to trip. Don't deep fry your turkey According to the U.S. Fire Administration, frying foods puts you at the greatest risk of cooking fires. Not only can turkey frying pots tip easily, any cooking oil that comes into contact with a burner can cause a large fire. The oil can also overheat to the point of combustion. If a turkey isn't fully thawed, it can cause the oil to spill too. If you do choose to deep fry your turkey, make sure you don't overfill the fryer.
