RITBA warns customers of text scam targeting toll accounts
Nov 26, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) is warning customers about a widespread text scam claiming they have an unpaid toll and directing them to a fake website.
According to RITBA, customers received texts on Tuesday saying they owed money "from your recent trip on the Kansas toll road." The messages urge recipients to click a link to settle the supposed balance to avoid additional fees.
Below is an example of the fraudulent message:
RITBA advises that these are "smishing" messages designed to trick users into visiting a fraudulent website. To safely check their accounts, customers should only use the official RITBA E-ZPass website.
Anyone who receives such a text is encouraged to report it to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center or forward the message to 7726 (SPAM).
