NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The Newport Police Department has received "several" reports of people calling residents and posing as Newport police. In a social media post, the city warned people about the scheme, saying the scam callers have claimed to be a sergeant, lieutenant or constable with the Newport Police Department. The callers told potential victims they are being "subpoenaed" and asked for money. Newport police said they will never ask anyone for personal information over the phone, nor do they have any constables.
