Former New Orleans Police Department sergeant pleads guilty to wire fraud

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A former New Orleans Police Department sergeant has pled guilty to defrauding the NOPD and the New Orleans Fair Grounds.
The Office of U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans reported that 57-year-old Todd Morrell pled guilty to six counts of wire fraud on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Seven accused of having weapons at Uptown second line
Court documents state that Morrell, a former NOPD sergeant and Fair Grounds Patrol detail officer, submitted false timecards to the NOPD and the Fair Grounds that stated he was working when he was actually engaging in personal activities like recreational race car driving.
The U.S. Attorney's Office reported that Morrell also double billed both agencies by "submitting time sheets to both entities reflecting that he was working for both simultaneously."

According to court documents, Morrell's charges stem from his claims to have worked on July 1, 2019; Dec. 21, 2020; Jan. 23, 2021; March 13, 2021; March 14, 2021; April 25, 2021; April 30, 2021; and Oct. 23, 2021.
Morrell faces up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release and an up to $250,000 fine for each count. His sentencing is set for Feb. 25, 2025.
