Fired employees blamed for 120 overturned headstones at Memphis cemetery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than 120 headstones at a Memphis cemetery were knocked over by freshly fired employees, the cemetery owner says.
WREG counted about 125 overturned headstones at New Park Cemetery off Horn Lake Road as Memphis Police investigated the scene Monday evening.
The damage potentially totals tens of thousands of dollars. The cemetery's owner says he's taking all the steps he can to get things fixed as soon as possible.
The cemetery's owner told police that three employees were fired Monday afternoon — but clearly they weren't going quietly.

The owner claims the employees got into a company work truck without permission and drove recklessly through the historic cemetery, knocking over the headstones.
A police report says that at one point, the "Owner got into his personal vehicle in an attempt to catch all three suspects."
He was able to recover the cemetery's work truck, and signed a refusal to prosecute.

We spoke to the owner about the situation. He asked not to be shown on camera, but said he "hates it happened" and is "taking steps" to make repairs.
As to why he chose not to prosecute, he said he was "concerned they could do more damage in the moment." But that decision is subject to change.
He said his team is going through and figuring out how many headstones were damaged. The team had a meeting Tuesday morning to figure out how to contact the affected families.
He also said he's made calls to a company to let them know they might need more headstones for those that have been damaged, as well as to a temp agency to let them know they will need help to get the affected headstones up again. He's hopeful it can be done by Christmas.
