After a few scattered showers and rumbles of thunder late Monday ahead of a passing frontal system, dry weather returned to the commonwealth Tuesday. It took a bit for the lingering clouds to scour out but the sunshine eventually returned through the afternoon as high temperatures dropped back several degrees compared to the last few days with most locations topping out in the upper 40s and low 50s. Conditions were tranquil for any early holiday travel but that may change into the mid-week as most folks hit the roadways and skies for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. A wave of low pressure will slide in from the west as we head into Wednesday bringing a renewed chance for showers across the region. Expect a mostly cloudy day with afternoon highs in the low 50s before the rain potential ramps up by late afternoon/early evening. Anyone traveling for the holiday will have a better chance of dealing with wet weather heading west and north during the daylight hours before the showers move into Central and Eastern Kentucky by Wednesday evening. It does appear the best chances for rain will be during the overnight hours so hopefully the more widespread activity holds off for a while. Heading into Thanksgiving on Thursday it should be damp and dreary to kick off the holiday with a few showers hanging around to start the day. It is looking more likely that the rain will end by afternoon leaving us mostly cloudy as afternoon highs back down into the low 40s. The big story into Black Friday and the second half of the holiday weekend will be the coldest air of the season arriving in the Ohio Valley. Early bird shoppers on Friday will have to deal with temperatures in the mid-20s and it won’t warm up significantly through the day as afternoon highs struggle to get back into the mid-30s. You’ll definitely need the winter clothes and heavier coats for the second half of the holiday weekend as a dry cold front brings a reinforcing shot of very chilly air into the Ohio Valley. Even with sunshine around, afternoon highs will only reach the mid-30s Saturday so keep that in mind if you are headed to Kroger Field for the Governor’s Cup game between Kentucky and Louisville. It will definitely be football weather! A mid-level wave will sweep through the region Saturday night and into early Sunday and even though it won’t have a lot of moisture with it, we may see a little coating of snow in spots into Sunday morning. The core of the cold air will arrive into Sunday with morning lows in the teens and highs potentially not even making it out of the 20s. Adding to the chill factor will be a brisk northwest wind so our “feel-like” temperatures may dip down into the teens at times. Expect more of the same as we kick off December into early next week as temperatures stay well below average for this time of the year. ABC 36 HOUR FORECAST TUESDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds and cold. Lows in the mid-30s. WEDNESDAY: Cloudy with late showers. Highs in the low to mid-50s. WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Occasional rain and cool. Lows in the upper-30s.
