LIBERTY, Mo. -- There are new developments regarding a trial for Andrew Lester, the man accused of shooting Ralph Yarl after he came to his door by mistake.
On Tuesday, in a Clay County courtroom, it was revealed that Lester's attorney had read his mental health evaluation, and they will be proceeding with the trial in February. They didn’t discuss the results of the evaluation.
Family of Ralph Yarl speaks out following defense attorney’s motion
In September, a mental evaluation was ordered for Lester following a motion from his attorneys claiming Lester couldn’t remember facts relating to the case and showed clear signs of confusion.
Lester has a pre-trial hearing set for January 24.
His Jury trial is set to begin on February 18. It’s expected to last two weeks.
Lester is charged with shooting Ralph Yarl, who was trying to pick up his siblings when he went to Lester’s home by mistake. The defense argues Lester was acting in self-defense and feared for his life.
FOX4 wasn’t able to get a comment from Lester’s attorney following the court hearing on Tuesday.
Ralph Yarl’s family released the following statement to FOX4 Tuesday evening:
"The family of Ralph Yarl is grateful that the trial against Andrew Lester is moving forward. This case represents more than just accountability—it’s a step toward justice for the trauma Ralph and our family have endured simply because he rang the doorbell at the wrong home. We remain committed to seeking fairness and ensuring that no other family has to face such pain due to the color of their skin. Thank you to all who continue to support justice for Ralph and our eagerness to put this chapter behind us."
