Forsyth County neighbors outraged over Pfafftown compound

FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- Forsyth County officials are pursuing misdemeanor charges against two men tied to the so-called “Pfafftown Compound” after months of missed deadlines to clean up the property.
The compound, located on Pfaff Lane, has been a source of frustration for neighbors, who describe it as an eyesore and embarrassment. Despite a cleanup order issued in July, progress has been slow with two county-imposed deadlines passing without the property being cleared.
The county has now drafted criminal summonses for Edwin Blankenship, who lives on the property, and his brother Christopher Blankenship, who owns the deed and lives next door. Officials say the case will now move to the courts unless the property is cleaned.
“We’ve reached the point where a judge must make that determination unless they finish the work that needs to be done here before they are standing before that judge in district court,” said Minor Barnette, director of Forsyth County’s Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection.
Neighbors say the situation has disrupted their lives and brought unwanted attention to the area, especially with family visiting during the holidays.
“It’s unacceptable! Someone needs to be held accountable for it! This has been going on for a very long time, and there’s still not any progress on it!” said Glenn Nandelstadt, who lives near the property.
Edwin Blankenship acknowledged he missed the deadlines but argued he has made efforts to address the county’s concerns.
“They gave me a certain time, and I didn’t make that time. That’s short, cut and dry. But progress has been made, so I don’t know why they wouldn’t say, ‘Let’s give him another week,’” Blankenship said.
However, neighbors are skeptical.
“You let it get that bad, and you’re still not being accountable for yourself!” Nandelstadt said. “Be a man! Take care of your property! What you’re doing there is wrong, and you know it!”
The county plans to present the criminal summonses to a magistrate by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.
