Alamance County woman helps feed community

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- As millions of families gather around a spread of food this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s also a good time to remember that there are people who struggle with having enough to eat not just during the holidays but every day.
Alamance County native Kristina Torain is doing her part to help people in her community.
Torain is an NC Hunger Corps VISTA through AmeriCorps who works at Alamance Community College.
“Being able to give back to my community and learn about the community through my job … It's been so rewarding for me,” she said.
Torain helped launch the opening of the college’s second food pantry located at the Dillingham Center campus in Burlington.
“73% of our students are non-traditional. That just means they don’t fit the high school to college pipeline,” Torain said.
“They are 1.5 to four times more likely to experience food insecurity, so that’s kind of where the need came from," she said.
ACC has multiple resources in place to address hunger on its campuses.
Along with the food pantry that offers shelf-stable food at the Dillingham Center, EZ Meals are also available to people in the ACC community who are hungry and do not have the money to buy something to eat. The ACC Culinary Club prepares them.
There’s also a snack wall where people can grab items if they do not need a full meal.
Fresh produce is available, too.
“We have a produce program. We partner with Loy Farm and Elon, and the ABLE students go over there … Our Adult Basic Literacy Education students go over there. They harvest for us. They come back, and they sort it, “Torain said.
Whatever the need may be, Torain is ready to serve anyone who asks for help.
“You may not need it, but one day you might really need it," she said. “Food insecurity ... just happens. People go through different waves."
“Just making sure that everybody knows like you're welcome here. It's a safe space. We’re not going to tell anybody, but you also shouldn't feel ashamed, so that’s the message we're ... trying to spread,” she said.
The food pantry at the Dillingham Center campus also provides toiletry items and feminine hygiene products.
