Report provides details on deadly Mount Pleasant autopedestrian collision

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – The woman killed after being struck by a vehicle in Mount Pleasant last week bent down to pick something up before she was hit, according to an incident report.
Reports released by the Mount Pleasant Police Department state that a pickup truck was stopped at the intersection of Magrath Darby Boulevard and W Coleman Boulevard on Nov. 18 when a pedestrian started to cross the road.
The pedestrian, identified as Mercedes Sykora, 61, was using the crosswalk around 1:30 p.m. when she dropped something and bent down to pick it up, witnesses told police after the incident.
The light turned green, and the pickup drove forward, causing the collision with Ms. Sykora. First responders arrived and took Sykora to the Medical University of South Carolina in critical condition.
She died early the following morning from injuries sustained in the collision, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
Mount Pleasant PD’s Traffic Unit is investigating this incident.
