How much money North Dakotans need to 'live comfortably'
Nov 26, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Financial security and comfort are major concerns for Americans, and a recent study has revealed the hourly and annual income that's needed for each state to live "comfortably."
Storeganise conducted the study and highlighted the cost-of-living differences in the country while showing some expected high-cost states and some surprisingly affordable states. However, living comfortably means different things to different people, so for the purpose of the study, "comfortable" reflects the income that covers necessities, allows for optional spending, and leaves room for saving.
These incomes estimate what it takes to achieve this kind of financial security. So, where does North Dakota stand on the income needed to live comfortably? Out of the 50 states, it ranks very low at number 45. People need an hourly wage of $36.28 or an annual income of $75,471.

One neighboring state is listed one spot higher: South Dakota needs $36.69 or $756,308 annually. Montana residents need to be making $37.65 an hour or $78,303 each year, putting them in the 34th spot. And Minnesota ranked 25th, with residents needing $39.98 an hour or $83,161 annually.
While our state is rather affordable, the most expensive state is Massachusetts and the least expensive is West Virginia.
"These numbers highlight just how dramatically the cost of comfortable giving can vary across the US. For those in higher-cost states like Massachusetts and California, it takes a significant income just to cover basic needs and sets aside a bit for the future," explained Miles Davies from Storeganise. "Meanwhile, states in the South and Midwest offer an easier way to financial comfort, with lower housing and general living costs. The results also highlight the unique economic factors in each region. In Hawaii and Alaska, for instance, remote locations drive up the cost of goods, adding extra financial pressure on residents. Ultimately, the study shows how important it is for individuals and families to understand local costs of living when planning their financial goals. Achieving a comfortable lifestyle looks very different depending on where you are, but it's possible with informed budgeting and realistic expectations."
