AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The end of the year marks a time of celebration and family fun, but there's also an unfortunate trend that looms over the holiday season -- an increase in burglaries. On Tuesday, the Austin Police Department held a press conference to inform the community about the increase of burglaries that happen around this time of the year. Police said November and December typically see 11% more burglaries than at any other point in the year. The good news is those crimes have seen a slight drop over the last few years. However, police recommended those with any home security systems should have them updated and ready to go. Additionally, police discussed another common trend that is seen around the holidays, which is mail and package theft. According to APD, thefts are about 50% higher in December compared to the rest of the year. Police continue to encourage the public to stay vigilant over the coming weeks. "Unfortunately we can't be everywhere. And it's going to take a community effort. That's why we highly recommend you do your part -- whether that's making sure your house is equipped with cameras and things of that nature so we can potentially catch these people after the criminal act has taken place," APD Cpl. Jose Mendez said during the press conference. Police also recommend shipping expensive packages to a safe and trusted location, or have friends and neighbors monitor or pick up those packages due to most of those thefts happening when people are away from home.
