Nostalgic tiki fave Trader Vic’s is reportedly reopening in West Hollywood next year

Steven Miller" />It’s always nice to hear about the return of beloved, bygone dining establishments, especially when they’re as eclectic and iconic as Trader Vic’s, the Polynesian-inspired restaurant and tiki bar that originally opened its first L.A. location at the Beverly Hilton back in 1955.
According to WeHoOnline, the chain is set to open a new flagship in West Hollywood some time next year. The previous location officially shut down back in 2007 (a short-lived follow-up at L.A. Live closed down in 2014).
“Everything we’re trying to do as a company is to bring back the rich history of Trader Vic’s,” said Rhett Rosen, the CEO of Trader Vic’s Hospitality Group, to the outlet.
WeHoOnline reports that the restaurant will be located at 9091 Santa Monica Boulevard, right near the Troubadour, and take over a 1920s brick building that’s been home to a bunch of different businesses over the years—though none recently.
“It has been vacant for decades, following a fire, though its rooftop billboards remain valuable to advertisers,” reads the report. “Nestled in a vibrant section of West Hollywood near hot spots like Coucou and Andy’s, the location is poised to attract both longtime fans and curious newcomers.”
The original Trader Vic’s was known for its Polynesian theme, signature food and take on the Mai Tai, the rum cocktail made with Curacao liqueur, orgeat syrup and lime juice. (The original location in Oakland is one of two spots that claims to have invented the cocktail.)
You can expect the latest iteration of the eatery to go big on cocktails in general (WeHoOnline reports that tropical drinks may “potentially” comprise 40% of the business) while paying homage to the oldest space’s decor, tiki mugs, menu and live music schedule.
Perhaps most exciting in the near term is the fact that the brand is planning on hosting a pop-up experience at Chain in Hollywood this December to reacquaint Angelenos with Trader Vic’s’ offerings. Expect classic cocktails, appetizers and more during the intimate event.
