New parking guidance system introduced for Rochester airport
Nov 26, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Monroe County has introduced a new parking guidance system for the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport.
The new system is known as ROC-PARKS. County Executive Adam Bello joined airport leaders and staff to share details on the new system, which they say makes parking easier and faster.
"This is a busy place, over 2.6 million people traveled through the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester Airport in 2023 and we expect 2024's passenger volume to be comparable," Bello said. "Anything you can do to reduce the time and stress is worth it."
ROC-PARKS uses colored lights to guide people around the airport's parking garage — red lights signal an occupied spot, green lights signal an available space, blue lights are handicap spaces, and purple lights are reserved spaces.
Furthermore, there will be signs at the parking garage displaying the number of available spaces in each row of the garage. Bello says this is similar in concept to some of the parking garages at Disney World.
The system also provides a reservation system to allow travelers to call before their trip and reserve a parking spot before their flight.
"This parking lot certainly is for many of us a gateway to the gateway," Senator Jeremy Cooney said. "Creating an efficient, seamless experience for passengers and travelers is incredibly important."
The airport was recently designated on USA Today's 10 best small airports in the country. It was designated for its "accommodating" security checkpoint and described as the "perfect jumping-off point" for an Upstate New York trip.
