'Fill gaps': Popup pantry in Canandaigua helps hundreds of families
Nov 26, 2024
CANANDAIGUA, NY (WROC) — Alan Titus is a good Samaritan who picks up food from different pantries around the Greater Rochester Area and delivers it to six families. He says he's retired and found it's a great way to stay active while meeting wonderful people.
"When I first started doing this, a lot of people acted proud, like they didn't need the help and what I've noticed is, most of the people I help," he said, "are what I call the working poor — mother and father work, the kids go to school and they don't have time to come to these events. So, I pick up the stuff and drop it off and everyone is thrilled with it."
There was a line of people waiting for the pop-up-pantry in Canandaigua to start distributing the 10 thousand pounds of food they had available. Four rows lined up as far as the eye can see.
Everything ran like a well-oiled machine — there's someone who tells folks when they can pull up to the center, and then when they can enter. They drive through with their trunks open, and volunteers start loading up supplies.
We're told around 300 families pick up fresh produce to help feed their families and they estimate each family has between three and six people — so they're helping upwards of 900 per pop-up. They do these once or twice per month. "If you don't eat, you don't make good decisions," said Karen Guidarelli the program director with Partnership for Ontario County. "And, if you can't access healthy food because it's too expensive, then your health takes a hit."
Organizers say they started distributing in the Canandaigua location at the beginning of COVID-19. However, Foodlink has morning and afternoon distributions at its pantries across the 10 Counties it serves in our area.
"This is just a great way to fill gaps in certain areas," said Elisha Van Norman, the rural programs Coordinator at Foodlink. "So, if a lot of people don't have food pantries, that's a reason why we have them in some areas — in this area, there's just a lot of need."
Titus says everyone has a place to put every nickel that they make, "if it just saves them a few dollars a week — I think that's what's really important."
Titus says he just wants everyone to enjoy the holidays this year.
