ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – When it comes to overall child well-being in New Mexico, the state ranks 50th in the nation according to a 'Kids Count' report. But that ranking doesn't even include child abuse and neglect data. What sort of indicators are used to measure child welfare? And how can New Mexico move out of last place? This week on the New Mexico News Insiders podcast, Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Amy Dudewicz and KRQE Investigative Reporter Ann Pierret join Chris and Gabby to discuss the complexities of the state's system of holding child abusers accountable. Lt. Dudewicz has had a long career in local law enforcement dealing with cases of child abuse, and shares some of the biggest challenges for law enforcement.  Watch Ann's investigation: Inside the complex system of holding child abusers accountable  "Often times what we find when we look into a Victoria Martens or an Omaree, or a James Dunklee, is that this was happening over and over again," explained Lt. Dudewicz. "So potentially this task-force-type mentality, or larger agencies getting together and trying to come together or to the table with a solution - might be a better answer." She argues more stakeholders, including community members, law enforcement, CYFD, and lawmakers should invest in solutions to improving child welfare. "These cases should be special," said Lt. Dudewicz. "They should be." Listen to the full discussion above for a full breakdown of the topics.
