PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — To once again encourage shoppers to support local businesses, the city of Providence is offering two hours of free parking throughout the holiday season. Mayor Brett Smiley announced that starting on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30, the complimentary parking will be available in designated business areas. See the full list below. "When you shop local and you shop small, you are supporting local employers who employ our neighbors and our friends, they reinvest their profits in our communities," Smiley said. "Every purchase, from your morning coffee to a boutique or evening restaurant is helping our local economy and finding something unique for holiday gifts." The free holiday parking will last through New Year's Day and will be enforced, according to Smiley. LIST: When will stores open on Black Friday? The mayor also said that effective immediately, there will be free 30-minute parking year-round outside the main entrance of City Hall on Washington Street. The goal is to make it easier for residents to access city services and conduct business like paying bills or filing paperwork. "Many of our residents took advantage of this parking during the most recent election and we saw how heavily it was used," Smiley added. The City Hall parking will also be enforced, so Smiley urged people to respect the 30-minute time limit.
