Cranston residents concerned about mulch causing brush fires

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Some people in Cranston are concerned about mulch after a brush fire broke out last week near I-295.
Residents who live in the area where the fire broke out raised their concerns at Monday night's city council meeting. They shared concerns about the size of the mulch piles and how close the fire got to their homes.
Last week firefighters were called to Eva Lane and Locust Glen Drive where intense flames from the mulch fire sent thick plumes of smoke into the night sky.
Firefighters worked through the night to put out the flames, but the cause is still unknown.

During the meeting, residents said firefighters came to their doors to tell them to evacuate. but luckily the fire didn't spread to any nearby homes.
One woman believes the mulch piles at the nearby landscaping business should not be too high as they can hold heat and pose a fire risk.
"It was very scary because if the wind was going towards us, that whole side of Eva Lane the homes would have gone up," the woman said. "I just don't know if it's possible to have some sort of an ordinance to prevent that height of a mulch pile. The piles are very very high."
The city council president said there have been conversations with the safety services committee about adding an item about the fire to next week's meeting. That is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 2.
