Cooler Tuesday ahead of rain heading into Thanksgiving
Nov 26, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Tuesday! Overnight rain has exited leading to cooler and drier conditions on Tuesday. Skies will be gradually clearing out by the afternoon while temperatures will struggle to get out of the mid-to-upper 40s. We will be tracking rain once again late Wednesday into your Thanksgiving. The heaviest of the rain will be overnight Wednesday into Thursday, though chilly rain showers will be possible throughout the day on Thanksgiving. Temperatures for the holiday will only reach the low-to-mid 30s. This is ahead of a shot of arctic air for the weekend and into early next week. This is not only cold for this time of the year, but would even be cold for January or February. Wind chills will be in the single digits by Monday morning!
Wednesday into Thanksgiving rain
Rain arrives late in the day on Wednesday and will last into Thanksgiving. The heaviest of the rain will likely be overnight, so it shouldn’t cause major issues for holiday travel. There will be lingering showers through the first part of the day on Thanksgiving, particularly across southeastern Kentucky. Temperatures will be chilly on Thanksgiving as well, as most areas will stay into the low-to-mid 40s. We could end the day with a few flakes flying for the mountains of southeastern Kentucky as the cold air moves in.
Cold air in place Friday into Saturday
Heading Black Friday shopping? You will need the winter jacket as temperatures will only reach the mid-30s Friday afternoon after starting the day in the upper 20s. Cloud cover will likely linger around through most of the day as well. Our coldest night of the season so far is expected overnight Friday into early Saturday morning. Many areas will be waking up well into the low 20s, with a few upper teens possible as well. If you’re heading to Kroger Field to tailgate for the Governor’s Cup on Saturday, make sure you dress for the cold temperatures! Morning temperatures will be in the 20s and the wind chill will be making it feel like the upper teens at times. For the game itself, temps will struggle to get out of the mid-30s with partly cloudy skies.
Snow shower chance Saturday night
An Alberta Clipper will be sweeping through the area late Saturday evening into early Sunday. This will bring a round of snow showers that may result in light accumulation across the region. Don’t expect heavy snow from this, but the ground could be covered as you wake up Sunday morning. Because temperatures will be in the 20s Sunday morning, slick spots will be possible on the less traveled roadways.
Arctic air Sunday into early next week
Behind that Alberta Clipper, arctic air will be in place Sunday afternoon and will last into early next week. Widespread morning temperatures in the teens will be likely Monday, while a few single digit lows in areas with a light snow on the ground will be possible. The wind chill Monday morning will be in the the low teens and single digits in spots. Prepare for a January or February type of shot of arctic air!
The colder than normal pattern is expected to last through at-least the first week of December, possibly longer. There may be a few afternoons closer to average, but overall the pattern is expected to stay below average.
