APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - With Thanksgiving just days away, the Appleton Fire Department has announced the start of its annual "Keep the Wreath Green" holiday safety program. According to a release, the program, meant to promote fire safety during the holidays and minimize residential and commercial fires, kicks off on November 26 with Santa's first trip through town and will run through New Year's Day. During this holiday safety program, officials say each Appleton Fire Department station will display wreaths with green bulbs but will begin replacing the green bulbs with red ones for each fire that occurs throughout the city. Tips on how to enjoy a Thanksgiving nap and not an emergency room visit from Aurora Health Care Firefighters report that the holiday season can be an extra-active time for them as decorative lighting, candle usage, holiday trees, holiday decorations, increased cooking, and extra family guests heighten the risk of fires. This year the Appleton Fire Department is hoping to break their 2011 record in which only one red bulb needed to be added to the wreath throughout the holiday season. For more information and updates on the "Keep the Wreath Green" program or for fire safety tips, keep a watchful eye on the department's social media pages.
