NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Three of North Charleston’s bravest are being recognized for potentially saving a man’s life. The North Charleston Police Department said it received a call in October from a California man who was in a panic and needing help. “He explained that his adult son lives in North Charleston and was struggling with severe alcoholism and depression,” the agency said. He told officers that his son expressed feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts during their last conversation and noted that it had been over a week since they last talked. The son’s phone was turned off. Police said the son’s ex-girlfriend visited his residence but did not get a response. The three officers - Sgt. Danielle Sherwood, Pfc. Andrew Johnson, and Pfc. Chris T. Cooper – coordinated a welfare check at the North Charleston home. “The officers understood that the father was elderly, and the situation could be life-threatening. The officers obtained a key and found the son suffering from a medical episode that may have been related to his addiction,” the department said. The officers called EMS when they found the son had been lying on the floor for days and was unable to move. All three were awarded Certificates of Recognition from the department for their commitment to protecting the people they serve.
