Making groceries: Is the cost of a Thanksgiving meal cheaper in Louisiana this year?

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A survey shows how much Louisiana residents are spending this year for a classic Thanksgiving meal.
According to the 2024 American Farm Bureau Federation Thanksgiving Dinner Price Survey, people in Louisiana should expect to spend $12.24 less than the national average for a meal for 10. Some classic items for the holiday meal counted in the survey include a turkey, veggie tray, pumpkin pie and sweet potatoes along with ingredients like eggs, flour and evaporated milk.
Turkey prices in Louisiana are $10.23 less than the national average for a 16-pound bird.
The average cost in Louisiana is $45.84, less than last year's state and national average, according to the survey. This year's national average is $58.08.
Here are the most heated Thanksgiving food fights
Families who choose to add more to their meals including boneless ham, russet potatoes and frozen green beans would see an increase of $18.22 for a total of $64.06. The American Farm Bureau Federation said this is still lower than the national average of $77.34.
“Farmers and ranchers across the state work tirelessly each day to ensure that we reap the benefits of their harvest during Thanksgiving,” Louisiana Farm Bureau President Richard Fontenot said. “Despite rising costs and narrow profit margins, it’s their hard work that sustains us.”
Shoppers in Louisiana can still expect to pay $1.48 more than the national average for a gallon of milk and 26 cents more for russet potatoes. Meanwhile, people in the state will pay less for turkey and cubed stuffing compared to the rest of the country.
