Will strike, forecast impact holiday travel? Savannah/Hilton Head Int'l weighs in
Nov 26, 2024
SAVANNAH, Ga (WSAV) - Federal officials expect around five million people to fly domestically this Thanksgiving holiday, but several factors could throw a wrench into travel plans.
As of Monday, Charlotte Douglas International Airport workers were officially on strike, demanding higher wages.
News 3 asked Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport officials if the strike has had any impacts locally.
“Hopefully that will not be long enough to call any major long-term rolling delays,” said Lori Lynah, director of Marketing and Air Service Development. “We haven't seen anything here yet today. I checked the Charlotte website earlier and they were not showing any delays as well. So, hopefully, they'll make it through the 24 hours, and it won't cause any longer-term problems.”

Weather delays are another factor that could potentially disrupt holiday plans. Lynah wants travelers to be mindful and keep a close eye on the forecast.
“It’s all we can do is tell people to stay up to date with your airline apps,” Lynah explained. “Make sure you have the most up-to-date app, and that's where you're going to get the most accurate information. We have flight information on our website, but what comes from the airline is still going to be the most current up-to-date information”
She said operations have been running smoothly as of Monday, with a steady stream of travelers throughout the day. We are told the airport’s busiest day will most likely be Wednesday.
“Make sure you check with TSA.gov so that you don't have anything in your carry-on bag or your checked bag that shouldn't be there,” said Lynah. “They can help you pack properly. That's the key. And then if you're coming to pick someone up at the airport who is arriving and from a flight, be sure and utilize our cell phone line because that's out of the traffic flow.”
If you are parking at the airport, be sure to show up two hours before your flight departs. Arrive at the airport 90 minutes if you are getting dropped off.
