HONOKOHAU SMALL BOAT HARBOR, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Multiple Department of Land and Natural Resources agencies are on high alert after a monk seal pup got comfortable around Honokohau Small Boat Harbor on Hawaii Island. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You Five-month-old pup Keaka, tag number T64/T65, has been seen at the busy harbor looking comfortable around boaters and fishers. DLNR officials added Keaka is also attracted to schools of akule fish, or bait balls, feeding on them "near the surface where fishers gather along the rocky shoreline." Kaʻōhau School students name newest pup on Mokulua Islets "She likes to interact with people who are taking pictures of her, and we have been getting reports that she’s being fed, either by coming in and eating the scraps that people are dumping off their boats or by some of the akule fishermen who are throwing her fish," DAR monitoring technician Tyler Jeschke said. As Keaka continues to interact, officials fear she will be unable to grow and mature as a wild seal. DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources and Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation partnered with The Marine Mammal Outreach to educate boaters and fishers who enter the harbor. To combat negative interactions, officials began several initiatives such as providing bags for scraps and posting signage around the harbor to maximize outreach. We hope people will be mindful not to feed her and to slow down and watch for her when entering or exiting the harbor. If we can get everyone to not feed her and to not toss scraps into the water, we hope she leaves on her own. Jeannine Rossa, DAR acting protected species program lead Officials hope these efforts will help prevent Keaka from getting hooked, which has already happened twice this month.
